4TH-3RD CENTURY B.C. ANCIENT GREEK TERRACOTTA PROTOME MASK

  • A Very Rare Opportunity To Own An Important Piece Of Ancient Greek History From The 4th-3rd Century B.C. Greek Civilization. This Ceramic Terracotta Protome Mask Is Moulded With A Woman`s Face And Adorned With An Archaic Stephane Headdress And Veil As Typically Seen On Protomes From This Time Period. The Protome Is Pierced At The Centre Of The Stephane For Suspension.
  • Pieces Such As This Are Rarely Found Outside Of Public Museums And Collections, With This Particular Example Being From The Private Collection Of An Esteemed London Collector, Having Been Previously Acquired From A North American Collector.
  • A Protome is A Type Of Adornment That Takes The Form Of The Head And Upper Torso Of Either A Human Or An Animal.
  • Protomes Were Often Used To Decorate Ancient Greek Architecture, Sculpture, And Pottery.
  • Many Protome Are Terracotta Busts Of Women That Were Representations Of Deities In The Greek And Phoenicians Cultures, Such As Demeter, Astarte Or Tanit.
  • In The Archaic Greek Style, They Were Often Wearing Stephane (Ancient Greece) (Diadem) And Veil. The Outline Of The Face Is Round And Full, With Long Pointed Oval Almond Shaped (Archaic Style) Eyes Placed At An Angle.
  • Similar Examples To This Piece Can Be Found In Several Museums Around The World Such As The Metropolitan Museum Of Art , The British Museum, The Louvre, The Museum Of Fine Arts (Budapest), The Museum Of The British School At Athens Or The Museo Arqueológico De Ibiza Y Formentera In Ibiza.
  • Dated To Circa. 4th-3rd Century B.C.
  • Size: 115mm x 70mm x 50mm
  • Provenance: Acquired By A North American Collector Between 1970-1996. Acquired By An Esteemed UK Collector In 2016 And Henceforth, Displayed In A Collection In London.
  • Literature: Cf. A Similar Example Is Exhibited In The British Museum (Museum Reference No. 1814,0704.808) (https://www.britishmuseum.org/collection/object/G_1814-0704-808)
  • Condition: This Piece Is Extremely Well Preserved And Remains In Excellent Condition. The Details Within The Protome Design Are Still Exceptionally Clear - Refer Images

EFT (Direct Deposit)
  • For invoices totalling in excess of $10,000. Payment must be made in full within two business days of the auction closing.
