Description

RARE CIRCA. 1ST CENTURY A.D. ROMAN EMPIRE BRONZE RING (FEATURING A BLUE CENTRE STONE)

  • A finely preserved ancient circa. 1st century A.D. Roman Empire bronze ring. This piece features a blue centre stone set with four prongs along with flared shoulders on either side of the head.
  • The Roman Empire was the post-Republican state of ancient Rome. It is generally understood to mean the period and territory ruled by the Romans following Octavian`s assumption of sole rule under the Principate in 27 BC. It included territories in Europe, North Africa, and Western Asia and was ruled by emperors. The fall of the Western Roman Empire in 476 AD conventionally marks the end of classical antiquity and the beginning of the Middle Ages.

Due to the Empire`s extent and endurance, its institutions and culture had a lasting influence on the development of language, religion, art, architecture, literature, philosophy, law, and forms of government across its territories. Latin evolved into the Romance languages while Medieval Greek became the language of the East. The Empire`s adoption of Christianity resulted in the formation of medieval Christendom. Roman and Greek art had a profound impact on the Italian Renaissance.

  • Dated to circa. 1st century A.D.
  • Weight: 3.35g

Provenance:

  • Has been exhibited in several important European collections including a notable Dutch private collection.
  • Acquired 1970-1980 by the curator of a UK collection and held in a collection in Surrey, United Kingdom.
  • Condition: This piece is extremely well preserved and remains in excellent condition. One side of the shank has slightly split from the shoulder as shown in the images. Overall, the ring is in excellent condition commensurate with age - refer images.
  • Accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity (Internationally recognised BidSafe authentication and verification number: 4998290-17)
  • Inspected and verified by an archaeologist and prominent historical author with a PhD in archaeology. (SN:4998304-17) (310996-1)
