  • This medieval period (circa. 12th - 15th century A.D.) lead winged lion statuette, likely represents Mark the Evangelist (Saint Mark).

  • According to Church tradition, Mark founded the episcopal see of Alexandria, which was one of the five most important sees of early Christianity.
  • His symbol is the winged lion.
  • The winged lion symbol is associated with Saint Mark because according to ancient legend, while taking refuge from a storm in the city of Venice, Mark was visited in a dream by an angel in the form of a winged lion.
  • In some depictions such as this statuette, the lion rests his front paws on the ground.
