EARLY BRONZE SANCTUARY OF LOYOLA (SOCIETY OF JESUS) TOKEN

  • This circa. 18th century A.D. bronze token from The Sanctuary of Loyola is a rare opportunity to own an important piece of religious history.
  • The obverse features the Society of Jesus emblem in which the Latin motto of the Society of Jesus `AD MAJOREM DEI GLORIAM` (``For the greater glory of God``), surrounds the initials `IHS` (Greek monogram composed by iota, eta and sigma).
  • The reverse features `IGNACE DE LOYOLA` surrounding a depiction of Ignatius of Loyola (Saint Ignatius of Loyola founded the religious order of the Society of Jesus).
  • Dated to circa. 18th century A.D. (1701 - 1800 A.D.)
  • Size: 40mm x 30mm
  • Ignatius of Loyola (c.23 October 1491 – 31 July 1556), venerated as Saint Ignatius of Loyola, was a Spanish Basque Catholic priest and theologian, who, with six companions, founded the religious order of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits), and became its first Superior General, in Paris in 1541.
  • Ignatius envisioned the purpose of the Society of Jesus to be missionary work and teaching.
  • As a former soldier, Ignatius paid particular attention to the spiritual formation of his recruits and recorded his method in the Spiritual Exercises (1548).
  • In time, the method has become known as Ignatian spirituality.
  • He was beatified in 1609 and was canonized as a saint on 12 March 1622.
  • He is the patron saint of the Basque provinces of Gipuzkoa and Biscay as well as of the Society of Jesus.
  • He was declared the patron saint of all spiritual retreats by Pope Pius XI in 1922.
  • The Sanctuary of Loyola or Loiola, or the Shrine and Basilica of Loyola, consists of a series of edifices built in Churrigueresque Baroque style around the birthplace of St. Ignatius of Loyola.
  • The sanctuary stands along the river Urola at the neighbourhood of Loyola in the municipality of Azpeitia, Basque Country, Spain.
  • After he died his birthplace became a place of veneration. In the seventeenth century the house where he was born was given to the Society of Jesus.
  • The Order built there, the Sanctuary of Loyola.
  • Provenance: this piece was recovered from an archaeological dig site in Berkshire, United Kingdom and has henceforth been held in a private collection in Sydney, Australia.
  • Condition: This piece is extremely well preserved and remains in excellent condition - refer images.
  • Accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity (Internationally recognised BidSafe authentication and verification number: 4998095-12)
  • Inspected and verified by an archaeologist and prominent historical author with a PhD in archaeology. (SN:4998095-12) (312324-2)
