Description

1650-332 B.C. ANCIENT EGYPTIAN STEATITE STONE SCARAB FIGURE WITH ENGRAVED MOTIF (SECOND INTERMEDIATE PERIOD)

  • A Very Rare Opportunity To Own An Important Piece Of Ancient Egyptian History From The 1650-332 B.C. (Second Intermediate Period) Egyptian Civilization.
  • This Early Scarab Figure With Anatomical Detailing Was Hand-Carved With Steatite Stone And The Base Of This Piece Has Been Engraved With A Depiction Of Scenery.
  • Also, As Typically Seen On Stone Scarabs From This Time, This Scarab Was Created With A Drilled Hole To Allow It To Be Suspended On A Thread If Necessary.
  • Stone Scarabs Such As This Piece Are Beetle-Shaped Amulets And Impression Seals Which Were Popular Throughout Ancient Egypt.
  • Through Their Inscriptions And Typology, They Prove To Be An Important Source Of Information For Archaeologists And Historians Of The Ancient World, And Represent A Significant Body Of Ancient Egyptian Art.
  • Scarabs Were Typically Carved In The Form Of A Scarab Beetle With Varying Degrees Of Naturalism But Usually At Least Indicating The Head, Wing Case And Legs But With A Flat Base.
  • The Base Was Usually Inscribed With Designs Or Hieroglyphs To Form An Impression Seal. They Were Usually Drilled From End To End To Allow Them To Be Strung On A Thread Or Incorporated Into A Swivel Ring.
  • Likely Due To Their Connections To The Egyptian God Khepri, Amulets In The Form Of Scarab Beetles Had Become Significant In Ancient Egypt By The Early Middle Kingdom And Remained Popular For The Rest Of The Pharaonic Period And Beyond.
  • The Egyptians Saw The Egyptian Scarab As A Symbol Of Renewal And Rebirth.
  • The Beetle Was Associated Closely With The Sun God Because Scarabs Roll Large Balls Of Dung In Which To Lay Their Eggs, A Behaviour That The Egyptians Thought Resembled The Progression Of The Sun Through The Sky From East To West.
  • Its Young Were Hatched From This Ball, And This Event Was Seen As An Act Of Spontaneous Self-Creation, Giving The Beetle An Even Stronger Association With The Sun God’s Creative Force.
  • Stone Scarabs Such As This Piece Are Displayed In Several Museums Around The World Such As The Egyptian Museum Of Cairo, The Metropolitan Museum Of Art , The British Museum And The Louvre.
