Description

ANCIENT MEDIEVAL LEAD TRADERS CLOTH SEAL (14TH CENTURY AD)

  • This lead cloth seal used by ancient cloth and textile traders is a rare opportunity to own an important piece of Medieval (Middle Ages) history from the 14th century A.D.This cloth seal is extremely well preserved and bears the lower right section of a cloth-worker`s privy mark.
  • Dated to circa. 14th century A.D. (1301 - 1400 A.D.)
  • Size: 17mm x 12mm
  • Lead seals were most commonly attached to textiles and can alternately be called bag seals or cloth seals depending on the item they marked so the collection of artifacts are simply called lead seals. To ensure the seal was securely attached to the item, they were stamped together using a matrix which would have had a reverse image of numerals, letters, or various designs on it. The image from the matrix would then be transferred into the lead, leaving the markings present on these pieces.

Lead seals were often stamped with information similar to what is seen on a clothing tag today, including marks which identify where goods were made, the manufacturer of the goods, the quality of those goods as determined by an inspector, and merchant and tax related information as the goods passed through various ports on its journey to its final destination. Typically, cloth itself deteriorates and is therefore rarely found on archaeological sites. So these seals are significant finds because they can tell archaeologists not only what types of textiles the colonists were using but also how much cloth was arriving to a location and where the cloth came from.

  • Literature: See Stuart F. Elton, Cloth Seals. An illustrated reference guide to the identification of lead seals attached to cloth, Oxford, 2017; See also Elton, pp.157-9, for Commonwealth seals.
  • Provenance: This piece was from the personal collection of a prestigious retired academic in the United Kingdom, acquired for the collection circa. 1990 - 2000. Has henceforth been held in a private collection in Sydney, Australia
  • Condition: This piece is extremely well preserved and remains in excellent condition - refer images.
  • Accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity (Internationally recognised BidSafe authentication and verification number: 4998095-16)
  • Inspected and verified by an archaeologist and prominent historical author with a PhD in archaeology. (SN:4998095-16) (312325-4)
