Description

ANCIENT MEDIEVAL TRADERS CLOTH SEAL FEATURING `GP` SUPPLIER INITIALS (CIRCA. 410AD - 1066AD)

  • A Finely Preserved Medieval Taxation Lead Cloth Seal Used By Ancient Cloth And Textile Traders. This Particular Piece Features The Supplier Initials, `GP` That Is Still Clearly Present On The Seal.
  • Dated To Circa. 410 - 1066 A.D.
  • Size: 18mm x 18mm
  • These Leaden Seals Were Most Commonly Attached To Textiles And Can Alternately Be Called Bag Seals Or Cloth Seals Depending On The Item They Marked So The Collection Of Artifacts Are Simply Called Lead Seals. To Ensure The Seal Was Securely Attached To The Item, They Were Stamped Together Using A Matrix Which Would Have Had A Reverse Image Of Numerals, Letters, Or Various Designs On It. The Image From The Matrix Would Then Be Transferred Into The Lead, Leaving The Markings We See On These Items Today.
  • Lead Seals Were Often Stamped With Information Similar To What Is Seen On A Clothing Tag Today, Including Marks Which Identify Where Goods Were Made, The Manufacturer Of The Goods, The Quality Of Those Goods As Determined By An Inspector, And Merchant And Tax Related Information As The Goods Passed Through Various Ports On Its Journey To Its Final Destination. Typically, Cloth Itself Deteriorates And Is Therefore Rarely Found On Archaeological Sites. So These Seals Are Significant Finds Because They Can Tell Archaeologists Not Only What Types Of Textiles The Colonists Were Using But Also How Much Cloth Was Arriving To A Location And Where The Cloth Came From.
  • Provenance: Recovered From An Archaeological Dig Site In Berkshire, UK, Then Held As Part Of A Private Collection.
  • Condition: This Piece Is Well Preserved And Remains In Excellent Condition Commensurate With Age (Seal Matrix Design Still Clearly Legible) - Refer Images
  • Accompanied By A Certificate Of Authenticity, (This Piece Is Accompanied By An Internationally Recognised BidSafe Authentication And Verification Number: 7216964-6) (SN:7216964-6) (312456-6)
