Expert Reviews

The latest rendition of Clicquot's emblematic NV Brut Yellow Label contains around 35% reserve wines—mostly from the last five vintages—and was finished with 10 grams per liter dosage. Offering up aromas of warm bread, peach, citrus oil and crushed chalk, it's medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy, with a sweet core of fruit marked by a touch of sweetness from its dosage, concluding with a clean, nicely defined finish. Almost 20 million bottles are produced every year.- The Wine Advocate

Winery Tasting Notes

Notes Image

Notes of ripe fruit, citrus, and brioche, complemented by a refreshing acidity. It has a fine, persistent mousse and a long finish, making it versatile for various occasions, from celebrations to casual gatherings. Veuve Clicquot Brut is often enjoyed on its own, but it also pairs beautifully with a range of dishes, from seafood to poultry.

Winery Profile

Champagne house as famous for its eponymous founder, the first great champagne widow (veuve in French), as for its wines. Nicole Barbe Ponsardin (1777–1866) married François Clicquot, an owner of Champagne vineyards, in 1798. The wedding took place in a Champagne cellar as churches were not yet reconsecrated following the French Revolution. François Clicquot died in 1805, leaving Mme Clicquot in charge of the company, which she renamed Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin. The widow steered the house carefully through the turbulent years of the First and Second Empires, defying Napoleon's blockades to ship the wine to Russia, and finding an export market in virtually every European court. 'La Grande Dame' is credited with inventing the riddling process called remuage, and adapting a piece of her own furniture into the first riddling table for that purpose. She devised the famous yellow label, still used for the non-vintage wine. On her death, the company passed to her former chief partner, another shrewd businessman, Édouard Werlé, and the house remained in the hands of the Werlé family until in 1987 it became part of the Moët Hennessy-Louis Vuitton group. The house style is based on Pinot Noir grapes and, in particular, those grown at Bouzy, where the house has large holdings. La Grande Dame is Clicquot's prestige cuvée, named, of course, after the widow. In 1990, the Champagne house purchased a majority stake in the western australian winery Cape Mentelle and its New Zealand subsidiary cloudy bay, completing the purchase in 2000.

  • The records or documents authenticating such an object or the history of its ownership.

Whenever you buy wine there is an inherent risk, as wine is a perishable good regardless of whether it is sealed under cork or screwcap. At GraysOnline we minimise the risk to you by providing as much information as possible regarding the provenance of the wine we sell.

We take the time to individually inspect each bottle and photograph it so you know exactly what you are buying. All Private Cellar wine stored at GraysOnline is kept in a temperature controlled wine storage area. Any wine that doesn’t meet our quality standards will not be sold.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 5 star designation are recognised as being of proven quality provenance, our team has verified that the wine has been stored correctly from original purchase straight from the winery, documentation, where possible, has been sighted and cellaring conditions have been inspected. This wine generally comes from only the best and most respected of wine collectors in Australia.

★ ★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 4 star designation have been cellared correctly as verified by the current owners. In general these wines have been purchased from retailers or traders and stored in cellared conditions from original purchase.

★ ★ ★

Wines displaying a 3 star designation are in good condition when we inspect and we are able to confirm some cellaring conditions but we are unable to verify all ownership and storage conditions of their history.

A wine displaying no stars doesn’t mean that there is a problem with the wine, it simply means that we have been unable to verify provenance, however a quality image is always available for the purchaser to make their own purchasing decisions.

Private Cellar wine is wine which has been stored for aging purposes in a Private Cellar.

Storing the wine and allowing it to age has the potential to improve the quality of the wine. While wine is perishable and capable of deteriorating, storing the wine can alter the aroma, colour, mouthfeel and taste of the wine in a way that may be more pleasing to the taster.
