Description

RARE CIRCA. 16TH CENTURY RENAISSANCE UNCLIPPED LEAD MUSKET BALL

  • A Rare And Unique UNCLIPPED Lead Musket Ball (Early Musket Ammunition) From The Post-Medieval Era (Renaissance Period).
  • This Lead Musket Ball Is Unclipped Such That The Excess Lead From Pouring The Molten Metal Into The Casting Mould Was Not Removed. As The Excess Was Not Clipped, This Would Never Have Been Able To Be Used As Fireable Ammunition.
  • A Musket Is A Muzzle-Loaded Long Gun That Appeared As A Smoothbore Weapon In The Early 16th Century, At First As A Heavier Variant Of The Arquebus, Capable Of Penetrating Plate Armour.
  • By The Mid-16th Century, This Type Of Musket Gradually Disappeared As The Use Of Heavy Armour Declined.
  • Musket Balls Are The Types Of Projectiles That Are Fired From Muskets. Before They Were Loaded Down The Muzzle, They Were Usually Wrapped In Paper Or Cloth, To Keep Excess Gas Behind The Barrel.
  • They Were Usually Made Of Lead. Musket Balls Were Made By Pouring Molten Lead Into A Musket Ball Mould And Trimming Off Surplus Lead Once It Had Cooled.
  • The Lead Musket Balls Expanded Upon Entering A Body, Often Causing A Large Exit Wound.
  • If The Musket Ball Was Not Wrapped In The Linen Patch, It Could Bounce From Side To Side Inside The Musket Barrel And Would Leave The Barrel In An Unpredictable Direction.
  • The Musket Ball Was Loaded Into The Smooth Bore By First Pouring A Powder Charge Down The Barrel, Wrapping A Linen Patch Around The Ball, Starting It Off With A Short Ramrod Or `Starter` Then Using The Longer Ramrod To Push It All The Way Down The Barrel.
  • The Renaissance Is A Period In History And A Cultural Movement Marking The Transition From The Middle Ages To Modernity, Covering The 15th And 16th Centuries And Characterized By An Effort To Revive And Surpass The Ideas And Achievements Of Classical
  • Antiquity; It Occurred After The Crisis Of The Late Middle Ages And Was Associated With Great Social Change In Most Fields And Disciplines, Including Art, Architecture, Politics, Literature, Exploration And Science.
  • Dated To Circa. 16th Century A.D. (The Renaissance Period)
  • Size: 20mm x 14mm x 14mm
  • Provenance: Acquired By The Collector Between 1990 - 2010 And Henceforth, Displayed In A Private Collection In East Anglia, England.
  • Condition: This Piece Is Extremely Well Preserved And Remains In Excellent Condition - Refer Images
  • Accompanied By A Certificate Of Authenticity (Internationally Recognised BidSafe Authentication And Verification Number: 4998192-29)
