Nine 255-206BC Ancient CHIN DYNASTY China Chinese Coin collection Lot
For the most part The Chin existed in one form or another as a feudal state under the Zhou for around seven hundred or so years. The Chin withdrew allegiance around 325BC and conquered the zhou around 255BC. The Chin started making coins around mid 200s BC slowly completely replacing the knife and spade coins that generally circulated. These coins circulated well into the early Han era. Very crudely cast getting them with any design still showing is a challenge.According to Michael Mitchiner (in Oriental Coins and their Values, The Ancient & Classical World, page 684), the suicide of Erh Shih Huang Ti (last Emperor of Chin) in 206 BC, resulted in a civil war in which a series of rebels fought for control of China. A warlord named Liu-peng arose the victor, declaring himself Emperor of Han in BC 202.While similar in size to later wu shu (And cash) coins weight was very erratic and must have caused havoc with commerce. That might have been why the Han started standardising coins and gave them a face value denomination (Although the Han themselves didnt make a particularly serious effort to maintain the weight standard of 0.65 grams per shu) (313787-18)
