Expert Reviews

The 2023 M3 Chardonnay leads with pressed flowers, curry leaf and iodine/oyster shell characters through the finish. The acidity is piercing—fearsome even—while the sulfides through the finish are angular and hard. This is traditionally a creamy, nutty, svelte wine, and I assume it will head in this direction given a year or so in bottle. Winemaker Adam Wadewitz is a proven wiz with Chardonnay—think of the Single Vineyard Shaw + Smith or the Tolpuddle wine—and so I have full confidence in this wine to pull together. For now, it is all about pineapple husk, tatami mat, apricot kernel and new paper notebook. 12.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.- The Wine Advocate

Winery Tasting Notes

Notes Image

This undoubtedly one of the best chardonnays in Australia. Serious and built to last, it’s refined and elegant and made with true craftsmanship, using wild ferments and allowing the fruit to shine. Stone fruit, lemon zest and grapefruit are at the heart of this white combined with subtle biscuity notes. It’s intense and weighty, balanced by fresh, crisp acid. Pair it with blackened flathead and tomato chilli chutney.

Balhannah Vineyards

In 1999 Shaw + Smith bought this picturesque 46 hectare property between Balhannah and Hahndorf. In 2000 the winery was built and Sauvignon Blanc, Shiraz, Pinot Noir and Riesling were planted.
