Premium Merlot grapes were fermented in a mix of rotary and static fermenters. Following 7 to 10 days on skins, the wine was gently pressed and matured on French oak for 3 to 6 months before blending and bottling. The result is a wine with deep colour, richness, and complexity.

Vintage

A cooler, wetter growing season in the Murray Darling region led to a later harvest, beginning in February and wrapping up in April. The slower ripening process allowed for excellent fruit development, with balanced natural acidity and concentrated flavours. Merlot from this vintage stands out with its expressive fruit and varietal character.

Winery Tasting Notes

Medium to deep crimson. Rich blackcurrant, dark cherry, and plum, layered with hints of fragrant spice and subtle toasty oak. Juicy plum and blackberry flavours with a touch of spice, supported by a smooth, velvety texture and supple tannins.

Enjoy with Slow-cooked beef stew with mashed potatoes and roasted carrots, or spinach and ricotta stuffed pasta shells with marinara sauce.

Winery Profile

After nearly three decades of growing grapes for some of Australia’s best known wine brands, the Zilzie winery was built in 1999 with the first vintage released under the Zilzie name in 2000.

The increasingly popular and distinctive Selection 23 range was introduced in 2004, while 2008 saw the re-release of our Bulloak range.

2009 has seen the culmination of many years dedication to selective vineyard sourcing deliver the “REGIONAL COLLECTION” of Zilzie wines. We’ve combed Australia’s best known wine regions, specifically targeting the varieties they excel at, for exceptional grape parcels to produce these wines.

We’ve come a long way in 10 years, with our winery tripling in capacity, and our range growing from the humble beginnings of four varieties, to now include consumer favourites such as Pinot Grigio, Moscato and Rosé.

It’s not all about size, Zilzie is also recognised for its exceptional quality, having won 27 trophies in its short history and is the only winery from our region rated 4.5 stars by James Halliday in his 2009 Wine Companion.
