Wine Summary Image

Clarendon Hills Astralis Syrah vineyard was discovered by Roman Bratasiuk in 1990. He didn’t have much in the way of winery resources in those days so he picked the vineyard by hand and stayed up that night crushing the fruit in a bucket with an empty Burgundy bottle. It was grassroots stuff and as rustic as you could imagine. But the wines were excellent and he sold out year on year and created a little winery that made small amounts of single vineyard expressions from very special old vine patches throughout Blewitt Springs, McLaren Vale. Across the first vintages 1990 to 1993 the wine was titled ‘Clarendon Hills Shiraz’ however in 1994 the wine was rebranded to Clarendon Hills Astralis Shiraz off the back of his belief this wine was out of this world. Astralis 1994 was in fact Australia’s first $100 bottle of wine and it was adorned in a black 360 ° label peppered with golden stars to emphasise the definition of Astralis “pertaining to the stars'”. It was a thing of beauty.

Expert Reviews

95 Pts - Wine Spectator - June 2001

Amazingly rich and seductive, a towering wine with layers and layers of rich blackberry, plum, cherry and sweet spice flavors that cascade across a dense structure, polished to a fare-thee-well so the flavors ring, unopposed by tannins; the tannins are present, but totally submerged in the flavors. The kind of wine you want to roll around in.

Winery Tasting Notes

Notes Image

The flagship of the Clarendon Hills collection. Opaque crimson colour with deep crimson mauve edge.

Perfumed nose, with aroma of violet, hints of leather, spice, cedar and blackcurrant.

On the palate the toasted oak is too dominant for the refined fruit, with spice, plum, liquorice and tar flavours.

Fine grained tannins, velvet smooth, followed by very long aftertaste of plum, spice and toasted oak.

Cellar 4-5 years.

Winery Profile

This is Clarendon Hills’ flagship wine. It is a member of Clarendon Hills’ ‘Grand Cru’ classification.

Every year, the Astralis vineyard produces the most beautiful wine in our cellar. Despite its non-differentiated treatment in the cellar, it always reveals the most rounded, sublime and seamless expression of syrah which ages like a rock.

The vast wealth of this wine’s varietal depth extends beyond the parameters of syrah - beckoning superlatives. Amazingly svelte in its balance of varietal depth with restrained power and super finely integrated extract, it is light on its feet and majestic once in focus. Overriding harmony meets an anarchical expression of Australian classic syrah. Lifted florals dance with rich meats, coffee, cola, chocolate, pan forte, turkish delight, graphite, bitumen, cigar tobacco, black cardamom, good quality soy sauce and crushed rocks. It is dense, yet creamy smooth.

This is a wine that is always the most beautiful in our cellar. We recommend it is always decanted. Only the patient will recoup the full dividend of cellaring this masterpiece.

93Pts - Wine Advocate 06/2009

The full-bodied, rich 1999 Astralis Syrah exhibits a gamy, floral, creme de cassis, and camphor-scented bouquet. It tastes like a slightly more layered, concentrated version of the 1997, but it does not possess the power, richness, concentration, and potential complexity of either the 1996 or 1998. The 1999 is 4-5 years away from full maturity, but it appears capable of lasting at least two more decades.

93Pts - Int'l Wine Cellar 08/2001

Deep ruby. Knockout nose combines black fruits, spices, espresso, meat and gunflint; very syrah. Tightly wound and unevolved, with black fruit, licorice and pepper flavors currently dominated by the wine oak element. Dense with extract but quite closed; doesn't yet show the sweetness of the Piggott Range bottling (or the '98 Astralis, for that matter). Strong tannins coat the teeth. Based on the track record of this wine, it's hard to imagine that it won't ultimately be the strongest of Clarendon's '99 shiraz bottlings.
