Part of Sale Rare & Fine Wine :: Proudly Penfolds
Warranty
Wine Summary Image

Robust and generously flavoured, Penfolds Bin 28 is an unashamedly traditional, warm-climate, Australian shiraz - a showcase for the variety. With a pedigree dating back to 1962, Bin 28 is a classic Penfolds style developed under the late Max Schubert’s leadership.

The wine took its name from the famous Kalimna Vineyard, purchased by Penfolds in 1945. Today’s Bin 28 is a multi-district blend, with the Barossa Valley always represented. Shiraz takes centre stage, with oak in support. The best vintages have remarkable longevity for a wine in Bin 28’s price bracket.

Winery Tasting Notes

Notes Image

Colour

Bright crimson red.

Aroma

Stewed, fleshy, dark and berry fruits - raspberry, plum and cherry. Elemental cocoa powder aroma at this stage, with dark chocolate, mocha and ground coffee about to unfold. Youthful.

Palate

Expansive and mouth-filling. Concentrated, with chewy ripe tannins and lingering sweet fruit. Flavours of pan forte - warm spices, chocolate, dried fig and dates. A benchmark

Bin 28 with excellent medium to long-term cellaring prospects - an impressive leap from the 1997.

Winery Profile

Australia's winemaking history of less than two hundred years is brief by European measures though, like Europe, punctuated by periods of extreme success and difficult times. From the earliest winemaking days Penfolds has figured prominently and few would argue the importance of Penfolds' influence on Australia's winemaking psyche.

Without the influence of Penfolds the modern Australian wine industry would look very different indeed. Sitting comfortably outside of fad and fashion, Penfolds has taken Australian wine to the world on a grand stage and forged a reputation for quality that is without peer.

Penfolds' reputation for making wines of provenance and cellaring potential might suggest a mantle of tradition and formality is the preferred attire of a company with so much history to defend. But to label Penfolds as simply an established and conventional winemaker, would be to confuse tradition with consideration and to overlook the innovative spirit that has driven Penfolds since its foundation, and continues to find expression in modern times.

If there is anything traditional about Penfolds, it is the practice of constantly reviewing the wines it already does well, and continuously evolving and refining styles as vineyards mature and access to ever older and more varied vineyard sites improves.

Sweeter than a first kiss. Noticeable but integrated vanillin oak input and a surprising amount of sweet, mulberried, cherried, black jellybean fruit flavour. It’s mid-weight, black-purple coloured and well controlled, but the confection of it detracts. Rating 87 - Campbell Mattinson, winefront.com.au (JAN/2005).
