This “Unearthed” treasure is a premium Shiraz from two Southern Fleurieu blocks. One block in McLaren Vale contributes deep earthy flavours with toasty oak, the second from my home in Carrickalinga (Australia’s first “Dark Sky” community) adds gripping tannins and great length. Big alcohol adds to the luscious sophistication making this a premium wine with a huge personality.

COLOUR

The appearance is solid earthy red with lively glints of vibrant Burgundy.

Aroma

The bouquet has obvious earthy tones, opening up with a little breathing to reveal licorice spice, dark chocolate and toasty oak with some leafy green herbs. The alcohol sweetness lifts the aromatic spices and savoury oak richness.

PALATE

The palate is powerful with bracing tannins and layers of flavour. The characteristic McLaren Vale earthiness is complimented by cloves, anise, earthy herbs, sophisticated oak and deep savoury herbs. The finish is full and lingering with a brandy spirit alcohol lift.

FOOD MATCHING

This style of wine is well suited to Mediterranean cuisine, smoked meats, spicy salami, rich tomato-based sauces with olives, basil and garlic. It also has the depth and composure to stand alone as an enjoyable experience in its own right.
