The wine that first highlighted the suitability of our site to produce premium cool climate Pinot Noir. Clonal and site selection matched with small batch winemaking produces the characteristic house-style of Pinot Noir that Castle Rock Estate is known for.

All estate fruit. Vine age 8-37 years. Hand and machine harvested. Blend of different treatments including: 7 day cold soak; whole bunch ferment; barrel fermentation. Filled to a mix of new and seasoned French barriques and puncheons, matured for 10 months on medium lees. 25% new oak, 15% whole bunch.

Bright, deep ruby. The nose is classic to the Estate style with Blackcurrants and strawberries mingling with subtle game and char. Good concentration of flavour while remaining bright and refreshing with a lip-smacking quality. Black and red fruits abundant, balanced by savoury BBQ char. The super fine tannin structure interwoven by the bright acid sets the palate up for a long, fine finish.

Food accompaniment: Perfect with duck but also try with lamb, chicken and mild Asian dishes.

Expert Reviews

94 Points “Opens with an exotic aroma of vibrant strawberry with slightly savoury nuances, it’s an engaging perfumed bouquet. The palate captures the season beautifully with a mix of sweet supple fruit with a dry savoury nuance supported by fine chalky tannins. It delivers a real burst of fruit intensity with the combination of 25% new oak and 16% whole bunch adding to its structure and mid-palate power.” Winepilot, Ray Jordan

94 Points “Damn, this is a great drink. It’s a shining beacon for how fabulously approachable and delicious Great Southern Pinot Noir can be. Pour this large. Machine harvested with a portion seeing whole bunch fermentation (15%) and another portion seeing barrel fermentation then spending ten months in mix of new and used French oak (25% new). Dark cherries and strawberries light up the stage with an evocative presence. It’s juicy yet there is some generosity for the curious. Tilled earth, char, a smidge of black tea, twigs and a little pine needle add detail. A fabulous length keeps you captivated and seeking more. I could have glass after glass. Big love! Drink to five years+” Qwine Reviews

Winery Profile

Rob Diletti is a quiet achiever who crafts very fine wines for Castle Rock Estate and other products. The hallmark of his style is a light touch and purity of fruit, resulting in wines that taste effortless and genuine. - Huon Hooke

The wines from Castle Rock Estate were made under contract at Alkoomi winery from 1986 to 2000. The next phase of growth was to make our wines on site at Castle Rock Estate. After the 2000 vintage we decided to bite the bullet and proceed with plans to build a 200 tonne winery on the estate. Despite having nearly twelve months, it was only just completed on time, the first tanks arriving only four days before the first grapes arrived.

Planned by Robert and Angelo the winery building makes use of the natural slope of the land and is built on two levels. The grapes are crushed and fermented on the upper level, then gravity fed into the press below, thus doing away with the need to pump the must. This is very important for Riesling as it reduces skin and seeds which give the juice hard phenolics.

The upper level houses four six tonne red fermenters. When the reds have finished fermenting, the press can be positioned below and filled simply by opening the door! The winery is a blend of age old, proven techniques and some equipment which is state of the art. The press, de-stemmer/crusher and refrigeration system were bought brand new so we are sure of their ability performance and reliability. The use of gravity ensure we are not over reliant on machines and we believe we have the right balance to maximise quality.

The wine is bottled on site by a portable bottling line which is set up on the back of a semi-trailer. This is an ideal arrangement as we aren't sending the wine away in a bulk tanker and we don't need to outlay huge capital for a bottling line. Bottling on site means we can be sure that the quality and freshness of the wine is maintained.

93 Points “Castle Rock and Rob Diletti may have established a stellar record for their wonderful Rieslings but it would be a mistake to ignore their Pinots. They rank at the very pinnacle of West Aussie Pinot Noir. The vines providing the fruit for this vintage are between eight and thirty seven years of age. A seven day cold soak, barrel fermentation and maturation for ten months in a combination of new and older French oak barriques and puncheons, a quarter of the oak new and 15% of the grapes whole bunches. Cherry red in colour, this exhibits an attractive, youthful and quite sappy nose. Notes of undergrowth, warm earth, fresh beetroot, red fruits and bay leaves. A fine line of vibrant acidity, there is grip here, and serious length. The wine retains intensity for its entire length, finishing with sleek tannins. Still very young, it will provide pleasure for the next five to six years.” Winepilot, Ken Gargett

91 Points “This stongly varietal 2023 Pinot Noir offers exceptional value for money with its waves of forest floor, beetroot and spicy tones that are pretty fruit-forward but still pack a real kick. Stalky and drying with a sappy bite, impressive and intent will build in the bottle over the medium. Drinking window: 2024-2030” Vinous.com, Angus Hughson, May 2024

“…Rob Diletti is producing an impressive range to challenge the best from more favoured areas like Tasmania and the Yarra Valley. Give this a few minutes after opening the bottle and it blossoms into a fragrant beauty that deftly combines fresh red berry characters and savoury hints. Perfect for pairing with duck, mushroom, or chicken dishes. Made from low-yielding 30-year-old vines that are hitting the heights.” Ciao Magazine, Winsor Dobbin
