Wine Summary Image

A patchwork of biodiversity surrounds the vineyard home to this expressive Chardonnay. It screams personality, structure, and incredible length and depth, largely thanks to the proximity to Bass Strait’s cooling sea breezes and resulting long ripening period. This a curvaceous wine, full of cheeky minerality. Don’t like Chardonnay? Think again. There’s beauty in restraint here … not a hint of over-the-top fruitiness to be found.

Decanter World Wine Awards 2024

96 Points

Oodles of succulent red grapefruit, lemon and pear overlay a profile of textured oak and flinty minerals. Strikingly fresh and crunchy with a generous finish.

Great velocity and detail

93 Points

Great velocity and detail with this release: pure stone and citrus fruits are taut and focused on a canvas of crystalline acidity and stone. Underlying tones of soft spice, oatmeal, white flowers, lemon sherbet and nougat with a sizzling mineral focus and great precision on the sustained finish. DB 13% alc.

Winery Tasting Notes

Initial aromas of spice, lemon curd and grapefruit opens to stone fruits with a hint of peach yoghurt. The palate is defined with brilliant, fine acidity, the texture of sun-kissed quartz and crushed oyster shell. Flavours of pear fill the mid-palate, with a seam of citrus keeping focus on the long, salivating finish.

Winery Profile

Brand Profile Image

Dalrymple Vineyards was established by Bertel and Anne Sundstrup in 1987. They were visionaries, travelling to France for inspiration and guidance. Situated in the heart of the highly acclaimed Pipers River region of northeast Tasmania, almost equidistant from Launceston, Scottsdale and George Town, the Sundstrups planted their vines on sloping hills that overlook Bass Strait – the wild sea separating Tasmania from the mainland.

The Vigneron

“I’m a simple man – my favourite things in life, apart from Pinot, are thick woollen socks on cold winter's nights, my rusty old pocketknife, making dried-smoked goose-meat sausages with my neighbours at Christmas time, and spear fishing in the river by my home.

“I'm a Tasmanian sheep farmer by birth but the mystery that turns grapes into wine hooked me early.

“Peers and mentors alike pointed me north to the mainland where I spent my time at the world famous Roseworthy Agricultural College in South Australia. I then served my apprenticeship in Burgundy, Bordeaux, California and New Zealand.

“And then came Dalrymple Vineyards. What I've learned is patience. Knowing that a vineyard is an evolving organism buffeted by climate and wind and rain and sun. There are no repeat years. No textbooks. The vineyard and I work together, each within our own limitations.

“Pinot Noir has always been my passion – the most difficult grape to grow, the most difficult wine to make well. The most satisfying of victories.”

It's an impressive wine

93 Points

This Pipers River Chardonnay from Dalrymple is complex with a measured concentration. Big love! Handpicked and whole bunch pressed, it sees a mix of new and old French oak as well as a 700L ceramic egg for ten months. Dehydrated peach, white fleshed nectarines and a little grapefruit tang get you in the mood. The oak supports the fruit with assurance and lets it speak up - nicely done. Time in the glass reveals that coveted oyster shell trait - yes! Some nuttiness raises its hand thanks to cashews with a nougat presence making itself known too. The lemony and grapefruit tang brings the mouth to water. Long, it's an impressive wine. Drink to five years+

The palate is rich and refined

93 Points

Light straw-yellow hue; the bouquet shows slightly muted vegetal and 'worked' characteristics, possibly some malolactic influence, and traces of silage and sweetcorn. The palate is rich and refined at the same moment, crisp and dry with a lift of tannin chew, and a lingering finish. Good flavour concentration. A touch eccentric but not that unusual for a Tassie chardy.

Compact and layered

93 Points

Aromas of white peaches, sliced apples, dried citrus peel, lemon curd and hints of praline. Medium- to full-bodied, compact and layered. Dense and mouth-filling yet delicate and smooth with rich but fresh and lively fruit. Long finish. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

It's a rich wine

90 Points

The 2021 Pipers River Chardonnay is possessed of piercing acidity that is like a javelin through the mid-palate. The fruit consists of melon and peach, lemongrass and straw, turmeric, galangal and nougat, ginger too, perhaps. It's a rich wine, with loads of acid and fruit and lashings of everything.
