Vinification

Fruit was hand-picked towards the end of harvest, as grenache achieves optimal fruit flavour and tannin ripeness later in the season. At the winery, grapes were gently crushed and destemmed to two-tonne open fermentation vessels, some of which had a small component of whole bunches. Ferments lasted around nine days and through this time fruit was hand plunged and pumped over to extract the desired level of tannin, colour and flavour. After 15 to 16 days on skins, wines were basket pressed to stainless steel and on the completion of primary fermentation, filled to seasoned French oak puncheons. After nine months on malo lees in oak, select barrels were blended to tank, lightly fined and filtered in the leadup to bottling.

Expert Reviews

The gruff exterior of an elder statesman – a snort of liquorice, soot and briar hedge laced with wild sage – which hides a tender heart of luscious red fruits and a silky voice like warm cocoa. Rich, opulent and seductive, but with a firm bite of ageworth Decanter

Winery Tasting Notes

Medium depth, black cherry and rosewood tones. Volumes of ripe raspberries, black cherries and dark florals scented with baharat spice. This beautifully ripened expression is gently framed in the briar wood and hazelnut of seasoned oak, freshened with thyme and sage. Primal and vital, the compelling deep fruit and gravelly tannin of old vine grenache is swathed in layers of silky texture from time on lees. A decadent pain au chocolate of seasoned oak is the patient reward of barrel age.

Food Match

Crispy quail with caramel soy and Asian slaw.

Drink

This vintage will drink well from release until 2030.

Winery Profile

Wirra Wirra is situated 37 km south of Adelaide in South Australia's famous McLaren Vale wine region. It is an historic site, which was originally built in 1894 and which by 1903 was producing a substantial quantity of wine that was primarily exported to the rest of the British Empire.

Wirra Wirra is an aboriginal name meaning "amongst the gumtrees". It was established by Robert Strangways Wigley, a former state cricketer and well known eccentric. Following his death in 1924 the vineyards were sold by his family and the cellars fell into disuse. It remained that way until 1969 when the site was bought from Vern Sparrow, son of Wigley's foreman Jack Sparrow, by cousins Greg and Roger Trott.

Assisted by Roger and armed with a few old photos and sketches, Greg re-built the derelict Wirra Wirra winery from two remaining walls and some slate fermenting tanks, transforming it into the handsome winery it is today. Trott did this all in his own inimitable style - always passionate, always iconoclastic, always fun and always unique. Trott lived by a simple philosophy; "Never give misery an even break, nor bad wine a second sip. You must be serious about quality, dedicated to your task in life, especially winemaking, but this should all be fun."

After a long illness, Trott passed away in 2005, but his spirit and sense of purpose is alive and well at Wirra Wirra. The winery has built a reputation for its classic McLaren Vale reds and elegant Adelaide Hills whites and has been described by James Halliday as “the best small to medium producer in McLaren vale and up there among the nation’s finest.”

Visitors to the historic ironstone cellars at Wirra Wirra will get a touch of Greg Trott's philosophy which is built around the celebration of life: great food, stimulating conversation, marvellous music, and of course a fine bottle of wine. From the massive post and rail fence, known as “Woodhenge” to the giant Angelus bell that sits atop the winery, Wirra Wirra has discoveries that have helped make it a must-visit destination in the McLaren Vale wine region.

“Deep crimson. Bush garrigue, dark cherry, strawberry with bitter dark chocolate notes. Richly flavoured, dense and chocolaty, with sweet fruit, chalky dense hint grippy tannins with some herbal, chinotto complexity.”
