A cracking vintage this one

95 Points

Shiraz sourced from the 1919 plantings of the Steeple vineyard in Light Pass. A cracking vintage this one and a wine to match. Plush Doris plums and black cherry fruits; blackberry, too, with hints of fine spice, cedar, black strap licorice, olive tapenade, dried herbs and crushed rock. Plenty of structure in the form of crushed-stone-like tannins and a really distinct, febrile energy to the wine's travel. Certainly impressive drinking now but this one will improve with some quiet times in the cellar.

Winery Tasting Notes

A brooding, deep red in colour. The aromas are an opulent mix of potpourri and red berries. Generous fruit flavours of cranberry, redcurrant and dark red cherries on the palate are supported with red fruit sweetness and long, flowing tannins. This is a wine of great balance, style and exceptional varietal characteristics.

Family-owned and run by Robert Hill Smith, Yalumba has long had a commitment to quality and has shown great vision in its selection of vineyard sites, new varieties and brands. It has always been a serious player at the top end of full-bodied (and full-blooded) Australian reds, and was the pioneer in the use of screwcaps. While its estate vineyards are largely planted to mainstream varieties, it has taken marketing ownership of viognier. However, these days its own brands revolve around the Y Series and a number of stand-alone brands across the length and breadth of SA. Yalumba has been very successful in building its export base. Exports to all major markets.
